The Order of Malta participates in the 55th OAS General Assembly in Antigua and Barbuda

On 25-27 June 2025, the 55th Regular Session of the Organisation of American States (OAS) General Assembly was held in Antigua and Barbuda.

At the invitation of the OAS General Secretariat, a Sovereign Order of Malta’s delegation -led by the Ambassador of the Order of Malta to Antigua and Barbuda, Przemyslaw Häuser-Schöneich – took part in the event.

The delegation participated in all events related to the General Assembly.

Ambassador Przemysław Häuser-Schöneich met with OAS Secretary General Albert Ramdin. During the meeting, the current state of OAS-SMOM relations and prospects for cooperation were discussed.

Ambassador Häuser-Schöneich also met with the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Honourable Gaston Browne, and Monsignor Juan Antonio Cruz Serrano, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the Organisation of American States. The topic of both meetings was the charitable activities of the Embassy of the Order of Malta in Antigua and Barbuda. Prime Minister Browne expressed his deep gratitude for the container of charitable aid sent by the Embassy, which arrived in Barbuda after the devastating Hurricane Irma.

Order of Malta volunteer doctors provide free care to people in need.

Volunteer doctors working with the Order of Malta’s Embassy in Antigua and Barbuda visit the homes of the elderly, the sick, and those in need. Most of these people do not leave their homes and cannot afford medical care. Volunteer doctors visit those in need in their homes and conduct basic medical examinations. They prescribe necessary medications, which are purchased at the expense of the Order of Malta’s embassy. For most of these people, the assistance provided by the Order of Malta’s volunteer doctors is their only access to medical care. In addition, the volunteers provide warm, high-calorie meals to those in need.

Thanks to the acquisition of a professional minibus, our aid reaches every part of the island.

People in need are scattered across the island. Due to illness, most of these people do not leave their homes, so our volunteers have to deliver meals to their homes. A professional minibus is very useful, as it enables our volunteers to travel across the whole island. The distribution of meals is also combined with brief meetings and conversations between our volunteers and those in need. For the first time in a long while, smiles have begun to appear on the faces of those in need.

Help for Benjamin, a blind man living in extreme poverty.

One of the people cared for by our Order of Malta volunteers is blind. He is a wonderful man named Benjamin. Unfortunately, due to illness and extreme poverty, he was living in conditions that were an affront to human dignity. A symbol of these dire conditions was the lack of a back door to his home and a floor that was completely destroyed and collapsing. Thanks to financial support from the Embassy of the Order of Malta and the work of our volunteers, we were able to repair the most damaged parts of his home, clean it up, and improve his living conditions. We thank all the volunteers of the Order of Malta for their commitment to helping Benjamin.
