Relations with Antigua and Barbuda

Diplomatic relations between the Sovereign Order of Malta and Antigua and Barbuda were established on October 20, 2009 in Havana, Cuba.

Official documents were signed by H.E. Przemyslaw Häuser-Schöneich then Ambassador of the Order of Malta to Cuba and H.E. Bruce Goodwin then Ambassador of Antigua and Barbuda to Cuba. The ceremony took place at the embassy of the Order of Malta in Havana and was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps, including the Head of the United States Interests Section Mission H.E. Jonathan Farrar and his wife.

The first ambassador of the Order of Malta to Antigua and Barbuda was H.E. Przemyslaw Häuser-Schöneich, who presented letters of credence to the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda on December 13, 2010.

From the beginning, the activities of the Embassy in Antigua and Barbuda have been focused on the implementation of charitable projects. Among them, the most noteworthy are financial support for the St. John’s hospice operating in Antigua and Barbuda and the dispatch of humanitarian aid containers for hurricane-ravaged Barbuda.

The humanitarian aid containers for Barbuda included food, generators, building materials, carchers, roofing materials, bandages, chemicals and cosmetics. In distributing humanitarian aid, the Embassy of the Order of Malta is working closely with the National Office of Disaster Services of Antigua and Barbuda and representatives of the local Catholic Church.

The Embassy of the Order of Malta maintains an ongoing relationship with local authorities including, in particular, the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda H.E. Sir Rodney Williams.

Recently, the Embassy realized the sending of several containers of humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Distribution of aid in Ukraine was handled by the John Paul II Catholic Parish in Lviv.

The Embassy was one of the co-organizers of a conference organized by the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development entitled “The Catholic Church towards the problem of smoking harm reduction”.
