Volunteers from the Order of Malta working at the SMOM Embassy to Antigua & Barbuda and Holy Family Cathedral are running a campaign to deliver meals to those in need. Poverty and disease are phenomena present throughout the world. However, in Antigua and Barbuda, they are particularly acute due to the fact that there are few charitable initiatives on the islands. Residents affected by poverty or disease often do not leave their homes due to the cost of travel or their inability to move around physically. With these people in mind, SMOM volunteers are delivering meals to their homes.
An important aspect of this activity is not only to feed people in need, but also to have direct contact with them, talk to them and sometimes organise basic medical assistance. The activities of SMOM volunteers ensure that people in need do not feel left alone. Remembering people and taking an interest in their problems is sometimes more important than the meals themselves.
